Chad Gable is finally explaining what really kept him out of action — and it turns out the injury situation was a lot messier than fans knew.

While speaking on his YouTube channel, Gable revealed that his issues started back in October during a WWE live event tour in the United Kingdom, where he was wrestling Gunther. Gable said something went wrong with his right bicep tendon during the match, even though he couldn’t point to one specific moment where it happened.

“Basically, to fill you in on what happened—this stems back a while—but in October of this last year, I was wrestling Gunther on a live event in the UK. Something happened to my bicep tendon on this side, which had never happened to me before. And I don’t even know specifically in the match what happened. It was nobody’s fault—it’s just a freak thing.”

Gable said he immediately knew something was off after the match because his bicep felt and looked strange. Doctors later found a slight tear in the tendon near his shoulder, but since it didn’t require surgery at the time, he kept wrestling and tried to strengthen it.

“I was walking to the back after the match. My bicep was feeling very funky, and I looked down at it, and it was also looking very funky. I got it checked out. It turned out I had a slight tear in my right bicep tendon—the one that attaches at the shoulder—but nothing serious enough that required surgery or whatever.”

The problem didn’t go away. Gable said his right arm kept getting worse, with pain, elbow issues, and trouble fully extending his arm. Eventually, he knew he needed more testing just to figure out what was really going on.

“But progressively, the right side—specifically my arm—was giving me more and more trouble. Sometimes I couldn’t extend my elbow all the way. Sometimes it hurt too. Sometimes I started having pain down here in the lower part of the bicep.”

Once Gable got MRIs, doctors found several issues on the right side, including distal bicep tendinitis, loose bodies causing locking, a bicep tear, and a partial rotator cuff tear. Gable didn’t sugarcoat how bad that side had become.

“The right elbow had tendinitis down here of the distal bicep. Loose bodies—which was the locking part. A tear approximately up here of the bicep. A partial rotator cuff tear. So the right side’s a mess.”

Things got even worse when doctors checked his left shoulder too. Gable said that scan revealed a partial full-thickness tear of the supraspinatus, one of the rotator cuff muscles, and that injury required surgery, which he ultimately underwent: “The left shoulder had a partial full-thickness tear of the rotator cuff muscle called the supraspinatus: So that needs to be repaired.”

Thankfully for Gable, he made his return during the Royal Rumble earlier this year and has since rebuilt serious momentum. After his iconic mask vs. mask match against Ludwig Kaiser last week, Gable is now right back in the limelight — only this time, fans know just how much he had to fight through to get there.
