Bryan Idol’s mother wasn’t about to let an NWA wrestler get away with putting his hands on her — and when she got another chance to confront Mike Mondo, she made sure he got a taste of his own medicine.
The bad blood started when Idol’s mother, Antoinette Nazar, attended a National Wrestling Alliance event to support her son. Everything was going fine until Mondo confronted her at ringside, leading to an incident that sent her falling backward into the crowd.
During an interview with WMDT, Nazar explained that she was calling out Mondo for cheating when things suddenly got physical.
“So I was scolding him and saying stop cheating, my son won, and he said that’s your son, and he just went and woosh, I fell backwards.”
That didn’t sit well with Idol, who made it clear that Mondo had crossed a line by involving his family. The NWA National Heavyweight Champion wasn’t interested in letting the situation go, and he promised that Mondo wouldn’t be the only one dealing with the consequences.
“Mondo, you put my hands on my mother, not only am I going to step in there with you, I want to hurt the ones that are near and dear to you.”
But here’s where things got interesting. Nazar wasn’t planning on sitting back and letting her son handle everything. When she attended another NWA event in Philadelphia, she found herself face-to-face with Mondo once again. And when he got in her face, she decided she’d had enough. This time, she slapped him right across the face.
“We had a rematch in Philadelphia, and I yelled at him again because he got in my face again, and I went boom and smacked him across the face.”
Meanwhile, Idol took his issues with Mondo into the ring, challenging him and his partner Slade to a triple threat ladder match for the NWA National Heavyweight Championship. Despite everything surrounding the rivalry, Idol managed to retain his title, giving him another reason to celebrate after his mother got some payback of her own. And while the family drama has become a major part of the rivalry, Idol also spoke about what it means to carry a championship previously held by some of wrestling’s biggest names, including WWE Hall of Famer Roddy Piper.
“One of my personal favorites had this championship, Rowdy Roddy Piper, so it’s really cool to have the National Heavyweight Champion share a legacy with a name like that.”
Idol may have kept his championship, but his mother might have delivered the most memorable shot of the entire feud. Mondo pushed her into the crowd during their first confrontation, only to find himself on the receiving end of a slap when they crossed paths again. And with the rivalry still going, there’s no telling whether this family feud has finally reached its breaking point.
