The confusion surrounding Becky Lynch vs. Sol Ruca at WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event may finally have an answer, because the match was apparently not planned as a title bout despite WWE graphics suggesting otherwise.
Fightful Select has provided an update on the situation, stating that sources indicated Lynch’s match against Ruca was not planned to be for the WWE Women’s Intercontinental Championship as of Thursday.
“Based on those we talked to, the Becky Lynch/Sol Ruca match was not planned as an IC Title match as of Thursday despite the confusion in graphics and promoting it.”
That update comes after WWE created plenty of uncertainty following the May 18 episode of Raw. During the show, Sol Ruca confronted Lynch and challenged her to a match at Saturday Night’s Main Event. Lynch agreed to face the WWE standout, but she never agreed to defend her championship during the exchange.
Despite that, WWE later promoted the match as being for the Women’s Intercontinental Championship, leading fans to believe Ruca had received a title opportunity after all. Lynch then took matters into her own hands and used social media to shut down the title match talk. The Women’s Intercontinental Champion blamed the confusion on wrestling media and insisted that her championship was never part of the deal.
“There seems to be misinformation regarding my Saturday Nights Main Event match!”
Lynch followed that statement by making it clear that she had no intention of putting her title up against Ruca.
“(The biased wrestling media is pushing the agenda that the title should be on the line!!) NOT GOING TO HAPPEN!!!!”
The champion then took another shot at Ruca, claiming the NXT star has not earned an opportunity at her championship. Lynch went on to position the match as a chance for Ruca to prove she belongs in the ring with her, rather than an opportunity to walk away with championship gold.
“I CLEARLY stated that SUCKER Sol Ruca has done NOTHING to earn a shot at MY VERY PRESTIGIOUS IC TITLE!! We will see if she can hang with the GREATEST female wrestler of all time. A LOT of people don’t think she will, but we will see!! Thank you for your attention on this matter – BTB”
For now, Becky Lynch vs. Sol Ruca appears set to remain a non-title fight, and Lynch is already treating it like an opportunity to humiliate a challenger she believes has not earned the right to compete for her championship. Whether Sol can make her regret that attitude at Saturday Night’s Main Event is now the real question.
What do you think happened with the confusing title match promotion, and should Sol Ruca get a shot at Becky Lynch’s Women’s Intercontinental Championship? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
