Batista says leaving WWE wasn’t about money, John Cena, or a falling out with the company. It came down to one thing—he refused to let his career stop growing.
Speaking to WOLF Gyms, the former multi-time world champion revealed that he walked away from WWE while he was still one of the company’s biggest stars because he felt the opportunities he wanted simply weren’t there. Rather than wait for things to change, he let his contract expire and took a massive gamble on himself. It wasn’t an easy decision.
“I left the company and I left on good terms. I left at the height of my career, but it was for the right reasons. But it was hard as f*** to walk away because I walked away and I went broke. It was nice having that check come in every week, man. But I walked away because the company was heading in a direction that just wasn’t right for me. And, you know, it worked out. I was lucky that it worked out.”
Batista made it clear that John Cena was never the problem. He pushed back on the long-running narrative that the two were real-life rivals, saying he has nothing but respect for Cena and is genuinely happy to see everything he’s accomplished in Hollywood. What frustrated Batista wasn’t Cena’s success—it was feeling like he had earned the same opportunities but never received them.
While Cena was landing movies, commercials, magazine covers and endorsement deals, Batista says he was carrying the workload inside WWE and believed he deserved to benefit from those same opportunities.
“This is not like an animosity thing towards John Cena. I don’t have anything but love and respect for John Cena… I root for John Cena. To see him being successful in films, it makes me feel good. But while he was doing films and commercials and magazines and endorsements, I was working. I was picking up slack here and there, and it was a grind. I thought it was unfair and I thought I should have those same opportunities within the company.”
Batista admitted WWE ultimately made the right business decision by building the company around Cena. Their careers followed similar paths for years, but he understood why Cena became the face of the company. Even so, he couldn’t shake the feeling that staying in WWE under those circumstances would hold him back as an entertainer.
At the same time, WWE’s move toward a family-friendly PG product only made things worse. Batista said he simply didn’t fit the direction the company was heading, describing himself as the complete opposite of what WWE wanted to present during that era.
“The company had taken this really PG turn and there was nothing f***ing PG about me. Like nothing. Not the way I wrestle, not the way I look, not my background, not my upbringing—nothing. John Cena, in that way, couldn’t be any more opposite.”
Rather than accept the situation, Batista tried to find another solution. He asked WWE if he could begin pursuing acting opportunities outside the company while continuing to wrestle. According to Batista, WWE immediately shut the idea down, telling him he was company intellectual property and couldn’t take outside work unless it was approved. That conversation ended up changing everything.
“So I was like, ‘If I can’t have these opportunities here… well, I should be able to go and have them outside of the company.’ And they said, ‘Absolutely not. No. We need you here… You’re intellectual property. You cannot work outside the company unless it’s approved by us.’
And I said, ‘Oh, well then I’m going to let my contract run out and I’m going to leave.’ And they said, ‘No, you’re not.’ ‘Just watch me.'”
Batista did exactly that. He allowed his WWE contract to expire, walked away while he was still at the top of the business, and took the risk of starting over—even though it meant watching his wrestling paycheck disappear. Looking back, he says that decision eventually led him to the acting career he wanted all along, and he didn’t return to WWE until after landing his breakthrough role in Guardians of the Galaxy.
