AJ Styles is tired of fans calling him a “company guy” just because he defends Triple H and WWE’s creative team.
While speaking on the Phenomenally Retro podcast, Styles called out fans who accuse him of blindly defending WWE whenever he gives credit to Triple H and the company’s writing team. Styles made it clear that he has no interest in being a WWE writer himself, because he believes the job is far harder than people realize.
“Listen, I would rather hurt myself than be a writer trying to fix these things because these are so tough. I don’t want a writer’s job. It’s unbelievably tough to do what they do.”
Styles then directly addressed people who assume he is only defending Triple H because he works for WWE. The former WWE Champion said fans would be shocked if they understood how much work goes into producing just one WWE show.
“Before someone comes at Triple H and everybody thinks, ‘Oh, you’re just trying to be a company guy!’—shut the freak up! If you had any idea what went on to put on one show—not shows—you would be blown away. How much work and thought, all these things that go into it—it’s harder than you think.”
Styles also pointed out that WWE creative has to plan across multiple shows while avoiding ideas that feel too similar to things fans still remember from the past.
“And not only to do it for one show—you’ve got to do it for more shows. And you’ve got to do it for everything. You know, things that have happened in the past, because you don’t want to do the same exact thing that people still remember. It’s very hard.”
He took one more shot at critics, saying anyone who thinks the job is easy can try applying for it themselves: “And yet people want to come at them. Here’s the thing—they’re always taking applications if you want to be a writer.”
Styles’ comments show that he has a lot of respect for the people working behind the scenes in WWE, even if fans do not always agree with the final product on television. He is not saying every storyline is perfect, but he clearly believes the amount of work behind each show deserves more respect.
