AJ Styles is clearing up what really happened during his WrestleMania 40 weekend brawl with LA Knight.
While speaking on the Phenomenally Retro podcast, Styles said the press event fight was not planned to go down the way it did. He explained that there wasn’t even security ready to break it up because nobody knew things were about to get physical: “No, it wasn’t supposed to be broken up by security because we didn’t know there was no security there to break up a fight.”
The WWE Hall of Famer said the whole situation got out of hand and was not what he wanted. His original plan was simply to stay in character as a heel and walk away from Knight, but that clearly didn’t happen.
“They didn’t know what was going on. I didn’t know it was going to happen. So yeah, it was not a good thing—let’s just say that. Not a good thing. It’s not what I wanted.”
Styles then made it clear that the moment shifted when LA Knight put him in a headlock, which he felt was a bad move. He added that he had been fine with leaving the scene and keeping the heel heat, but things didn’t play out that way.
“But then when LA Knight came over and headlocked me—that’s not good. That’s not a good idea. I was good with walking away and being the heel. Didn’t happen.”
The brawl originally happened during a WrestleMania 40 media event, where Styles and Knight were seated close to each other before things escalated. Knight previously said he didn’t plan the fight either, but once Styles threw a stool in his direction, he felt they had to fight. Now, Styles is giving his side and making it clear the brawl was not supposed to spiral like that. For him, the issue began when things got too physical instead of staying within the moment.
