AJ Mendez revealed that one of the hardest moments in her family’s mental health journey also helped bring answers.
During her appearance on State Of Mind with Maurice Benard, AJ talked about her mother’s bipolar disorder and how long it took for her to get diagnosed. The conversation turned to hospitalization, and AJ explained that her mother hitting a very low point forced the family to confront what was really going on.
“She’s been hospitalized. I’ve also been hospitalized, and not in like a long-term unit, luckily. But I think her hitting her lowest part when she did have to get hospitalized is what gave us the answers. That’s when we were like forced to get the diagnosis. Like, okay, something’s really wrong here.”
AJ said that moment did not just help her mother, it also helped AJ understand herself. AJ also made it clear that she feels for what her mother went through before getting that help.
“That is also her getting that diagnosis is when I was like, ‘Oh, I have the exact same symptoms as her. I think I have the same thing.’ And then I went on my journey of getting a diagnosis because she got hers first.”
“I feel so bad that she had to, you know, fight that war first on her own.”
Mendez’s comments showed that diagnosis can be a painful road, but it can also be the first real step toward understanding what someone has been dealing with. For AJ, her mother’s diagnosis became the mirror that helped her recognize her own battle.
