Kenny Omega challenging MJF for the AEW World Championship next week may have looked like a last-minute decision, but it turns out AEW has been heading in this direction for a lot longer than fans realized.
The match may have only been announced recently for Beach Break, but according to Fightful Select, AEW has had Omega challenging MJF for the AEW World Championship planned for well over three months.
“The plan for Kenny Omega vs. MJF for the AEW World Championship has been in effect for well over three months at the very least.”
That changes the way this whole thing looks. Bryan Alvarez previously said on Wrestling Observer Radio that AEW recently moved the match up from what appeared to be AEW Redemption in Montreal. Fightful’s update backs up the bigger point: the match itself was always the direction, even if the date changed.
“The long-term plan was for AEW Redemption.”
That would have made plenty of sense. Redemption takes place July 26 in Montreal, and Omega working a major AEW World Title match in Canada would have been an easy sell.
Instead, AEW is giving fans MJF vs. Omega on next week’s Beach Break edition of Dynamite, with a brutal stipulation attached. If Omega loses, he can never challenge for the AEW World Championship again. So the match was not rushed. The shift was the timing.
AEW apparently had the destination mapped out for months, but somewhere along the way, the company decided not to wait until Redemption. Now Beach Break gets the huge title match, and Montreal is left with a major question about what AEW has planned instead.
