Dave Meltzer has apparently defended AEW’s booking so strongly that even people working inside the company have wondered whether he’s secretly helping Tony Khan put the show together.

During an episode of Wrestling Observer Live, Bryan Alvarez addressed the arguments he regularly gets into with Meltzer over AEW Dynamite. Alvarez said the two often disagree about the show, with Meltzer frequently taking AEW’s side and defending its booking decisions.

“You know, sometimes Dave and I will get into an argument over Dynamite, and Dave loves to defend Dynamite. And of course, you get people on the internet going, ‘This guy’s gotta be booking the show.’”

The jokes about Meltzer secretly booking AEW apparently aren’t limited to wrestling fans online. Alvarez claimed people who actually work for AEW have contacted him and directly asked whether Meltzer is helping Khan book the promotion.

“I have actually spoken to people in AEW who have asked me, ‘Is this guy helping Tony book?’ And I’m like, ‘No, he’s not.’”

The clip was later brought up on the Pro Wrestling Bits YouTube channel featuring Alvarez and Meltzer, putting Alvarez’s claim directly in front of the man being accused of having a hand in AEW creative.

There’s no suggestion from Alvarez that Meltzer actually has any role in booking Dynamite. In fact, he explicitly denied it when AEW talent asked him. The interesting part is that Meltzer’s defense of the product has apparently been noticeable enough for people inside AEW itself to start asking the same question fans have been throwing around online.

That’s a pretty unusual place for the perception to reach. Fans wondering whether Meltzer has Tony Khan’s ear is one thing, but according to Alvarez, even people collecting an AEW paycheck have wondered just how close Meltzer is to the booking process.

What do you make of AEW employees asking Bryan Alvarez whether Dave Meltzer helps Tony Khan book the show? Let us know in the comments.
