Police say the scam happened back in March, but when investigators tried to figure out exactly how someone posing as the WWE star pulled it off, the victim apparently refused to cooperate.
WPXI-TV in Pittsburgh broke down the bizarre Rhea Ripley impersonation scam, citing information released by Pennsylvania State Police in Kittanning. Troopers said an unknown person — or possibly multiple people — posed as Ripley and managed to get hundreds of thousands of dollars from the 64-year-old man. WPXI laid out just how crazy the situation became.
“A local man lost tens of thousands of dollars to a scammer impersonating a WWE wrestler.
Information shared by Pennsylvania State Police in Kittanning this week said they have crime happened in March.
Troopers said an unknown person or persons were portraying themselves as WWE wrestler Rhea Ripley. They were able to get $427,000 from a 64-year-old man through this scheme.
A public information officer said the victim refused to cooperate with troopers’ investigation.
No arrests have been made at this time.”
Yes, that number is $427,000. Police haven’t revealed how the fake Rhea Ripley convinced the man to start sending money, what story the scammer used or how many payments were involved. Things somehow get even weirder. After losing what police say was nearly half a million dollars, the victim refused to cooperate with troopers investigating the scam, leaving authorities with very little public explanation for how the whole thing went this far.
Ripley has had to deal with people misusing her name and image before, including when she personally shut down a fake AI-generated WWE render that a fan had shared as real. That incident was nowhere near this level financially, but it showed how easily fake material involving a major WWE star can circulate online. Her popularity has also created some seriously uncomfortable situations away from the ring. Ripley previously warned fans not to send mail directly to her home, after dealing with people crossing the line into her private life.
There is nothing suggesting Ripley herself had any involvement in the Pennsylvania scam beyond somebody allegedly stealing her identity to hook the victim. As of the latest police information, no arrests have been made, and investigators are apparently dealing with a $427,000 mystery without much help from the man who lost the cash.
