Former WWE NXT referee Drake Wuertz was fired by the company back in 2021 due to his controversial activities outside of the squared circle. Since then, he’s been competing in the indies and now it appears he resurfaced in a very bizarre gimmick during a recent indie show.
During the JCW Lunacy event, Drake Wuertz made his shocking appearance as he debuted a new character called Mr. Fifties. The former NXT referee completely colored his body in gray and he came out to a 50s-inspired entrance theme.
Drake Wuertz wore a coat, suspenders and a top right out of the 50s while doing his best Elvis Presley impression, including classic rock and roll moves in front of the audience. He would then head to the ring for his match against Shane Mercer.
During his time in NXT, Drake Wuertz was suspended from the Performance Center. The controversial referee gained infamy after sharing right-winged opinions that bordered on QAnon conspiracies. He would eventually distance himself from such stances but it was too little too late was WWE eventually fired him.
Drake Wuertz is now focused on making a name for himself, even if it means debuting a very unusual new character. It’s not clear yet if “Mr. Fifties” will be a regular part of his act or just a one-time thing, but one thing is certain: Wuertz is still trying to stay relevant, despite the many controversies around him even now.
