Pat McAfee was a mainstay of WWE television but he’s been away for a while because of his non-WWE duties. That changed as he returned during the Royal Rumble and even competed in a match. Now, McAfee explained why he eliminated himself from the Royal Rumble.

The journey to WrestleMania commenced on January 27 with the Royal Rumble Premium Live Event. Before the first match, Pat McAfee entered the ring and joined the broadcast team, reuniting with his former SmackDown commentary partner Michael Cole.

McAfee clearly wasn’t done as he later entered the Men’s Royal Rumble match and eliminated himself right after he saw Omos and Bron Breakker staring him down in the ring.

While speaking during backstage interview following the Royal Rumble Premium Live Event, Pat McAfee stated that he wasn’t given the heads up for his Royal Rumble appearance. He then explained why he eliminated himself from the match, noting that he didn’t want to have anything to do with Omos or Bron Breakker.

”All of a sudden, 22 up and I’m in the Royal Rumble, nobody gave me the heads up about that. I got my cowboy boots on. Michael Cole let me go in there, that was rude of him I thought we were friends. Then there was a thing in there, 7’3” it was like looking up at a statue of a being. I see little Bron Breaker barking at me, I’m like I’m not supposed to be here right now, I’m not prepared for this. Also who would I be to take a main event spot at WrestleMania spot from somebody? I got my ass out there. Now I went back in thinking ‘Wait a minute, am I just gonna be a coward?’ Then I realized quickly, yeah I am.”

Fans were certainly happy to see Pat McAfee back on WWE television after several months, but it is likely to be a one-off appearance once again. Only time will tell when he will return to WWE television again.
