WWE SmackDown Results Coverage, Reactions and Highlights For September 29, 2023

Tonight’s SmackDown is set to feature Rey Mysterio defending his United States Championship against fellow LWO member Santos Escobar.

Bayley one on one against Charlotte Flair

Bobby Lashley as the special guest on The Grayson Waller Effect

It should be interesting to see how things play out on tonight’s show.

SmackDown kicks off with Jimmy Uso making his way out to the ring along with Paul Heyman and Solo Sikoa. Paul Heyman says that “we acknowledge our Tribal Chief” and so does everyone in the crowd. Heyman says it is in Roman Reigns’ name that last week John Cena took a beating at the hands of the Bloodline. Heyman then shows a video recap of last week’s SmackDown where AJ Styles was taken out backstage and John Cena being beaten down the Jimmy and Sikoa.

Heyman says that a little birdie told him backstage that John Cena is experiencing transportation issues tonight and is not currently at SmackDown tonight. Heyman says AJ Styles is lying in a hospital bed also not at SmackDown. Jimmy grabs the mic from Heyman and says the real reason Cena isn’t here is because he is scared of Jimmy Uso. Jimmy Uso is attacked from behind by Karl Anderson, who clears the ring of both Sikoa and Jimmy. Anderson screams at the Bloodline and demands a match right now. Sikoa tells Jimmy better handle this right now.

*Commercial break*

Jimmy Uso vs Karl Anderson

SamckDown returns with the match already underway. Anderson hits a kick in the corner and plants Jimmy with a spine buster. Anderson puts Jimmy on the top rope but Jimmy pokes the eyes to send Anderson down to the mat. Jimmy goes up top and hits an Uso splash, Jimmy covers for the three count t end a quick opening match.

Winner: Jimmy Uso

After the bell Anderson gets up and goes after Jimmy Uso again, Sikoa gets in the ring to take out Anderson and save Jimmy. As Jimmy and Sikoa walk up the ramp Michin walks out, after Jimmy taunts Michin, Michin slaps Jimmy across the face and goes to the ring to check on Anderson.

We go backstage where Santos Escobar is interviewed. Escobar says he is focused on his match but there are butterflies in his stomach. Escobar says this is a match he has dreamed about and that Rey Mysterio is in for the fight of his life.

*Commercial break*

Back live with Jimmy Uso walking angrily backstage. Jimmy staigut up assaults multiple backstage workers as Paul Heyman calls Roman Reigns.

We cut back to the ring where Grayson Waller is introduced for another installment of The Grayson Waller Effect. Waller says Cena may be the greatest of all time, but he certainly isn’t the greatest at being on time. Waller then introduces his guest tonight, Bobby Lashley. Waller alludes to the “devastating loss” The Street Profits suffered last week. Lashley says he made a mistake in scouting for talent and it’s back to the drawing board for him. Waller says maybe Lashley needs to look for a new team, an undefeated team, Austin Theory and Grayson Waller. Lashley says he knows about Austin Theory and he will pass.

The show is interrupted by the Street Profits making their way out appearing in a very serious mood. Lashley says he doesn’t want to hear excuses, and if they want something out of him, prove it. Lashley leaves the ring and Dawkins and Ford follow and Lashley again tells them to prove it.

Waller expresses confusion and brings out Austin Theory to try and get the show back on track. Theory stares down Lashley for a second before making his way down to the ring as Theory is set to take on Cameron Grimes up next.

*Commercial break*

SmackDown returns with a promo video of Dragon Lee, after which Dragon lee is then shown sitting at ringside.

Austin Theory vs Cameron Grimes

The match starts with Grimes attack Theory from behind as Theory is distracted by taunting Dragon Lee. Grimes hits an enziguri and then climbs up top and hits a flying cross body, Grimes covers for a two count. Grimes hits a lariat to knock Theory out of the ring. Grimes follows out and gets distracted by Grayson Waller. Off this distraction Theory throws Grimes face-first to the ring post. Back in the ring Theory hits the A-toen down and covers for three.

Winner: Austin Theory

After the match Theory goes to confront Dragon Lee. The two shove each other but the referee holds Theory back and Waller gets Theory to leave the area and head to the back.

Rey Mysterio is interviewed backstage. Mysterio says LWO is family and always will be. Mysterio says he grew up watching Escobar’s dad. Mysterio says he will bring his best tonight and he expects the same from Escobar tonight.

Mysterio then makes his entrance for his upcoming title match.

SmackDown return live with Jimmy Uso attacking Ashante Thee Adonis of Hit Row backstage. WWE officials drag Jimmy away and then Sikoa slams Ashante through a table with a uranage.

United States Championship: Rey Mysterio vs Santos Escobar

Our United States Championship match begins with a lock up. Escobar takes mysterio to the mat with a waist lock. Mysterio is able to break free. Escobar hits a kick to knock Mysterio out of the ring and Escobar follows with a dive to the outside to take out Mysterio.

*Commercial break*

The championship match continues live with Escobar having Mysterio in an abdominal stretch. Mysterio breaks free and hits an arm drag take down. Escobar hits a drop kick and goes for the cover for two. Escobar gets knocked out of the ring and Mysterio hits a springboard dive to Escobar outside. Back in the ring Mysterio climbs up top and hits a seated senton and Mysterio follows with a running cross body. We cut to a split screen where we see Jimmy Uso attacking more people backstage, glad we cut to that in the middle of a title match. Mysterio sends Escobar to the ropes and Mysterio goes for the 619 but Escobar hits a super kick, Mysterio falls out of the ring and Escobar hits a tope suicida to Mysterio. Escobar then hits a moonsault off the barricade. Escobar throws Mysterio back in the ring and hits a meteora in the corner. Escobar then hits a second meteora and places Mysterio on the top rope. Mysterio fights Escobar off the top rope but Escobar gets back up and hits a huricanrana.

*Commercial break*

Back live with Escobar locking Mysterio in the Gory special. Mysterio breaks free with an arm drag. Wscobar climb up top and goes for a cross body but Mysterio dodges. Mysterio goes for a cross body but this time Escobar dodges Mysterio. Escobar locks in a torture rack and then drops Mysterio with a back breaker, Escobar then covers for two. Escobar catches Mysterio in mid air and goes for a power bomb but Mysterio counters with a roll up for two. Escobar grabs Mysterio on the top rope but Mysterio breaks free and hits a huricanrana. Mysterio kicks Escobar into the ropes and goes for the 619 but Escobar catches Mysterio’s legs. Mysterio once again knocks Escobar to the ropes and hits the 619 this time. Mysterio goes to the top rope and goes for the splash but Escobar avoids it. Escobar falls to a cover but Mysterio counters with a crucifix like it’s no Mercy 2008 but Escobar kicks out at two. Escobar goes for the phantom driver but Mysterio counters with a roll up for three.

Winner: Rey Mysterio

After the match Mysterio goes to help Escobar up but the two are attacked by The Street Profits who clear the ring of the two. Following this assault Bobby Lashley then makes his way out to the ring with a big smile on his face. Lashley applauds and then Lashley turns to attack a running Joaquin Wilde as Dawkins and Ford take out Cruz Del Toro who also runs out to try and make the save. Lashley embraces Ford and Dawkins outside the ring.

SmackDown returns with the LWO being interviewed backstage. Mysterio challenges The Street Profits and Lashley to a match at Fastlane.

Charlotte Flair makes her entrance for her upcoming match. We then cut to backstage where we see John Cena recklessly driving in a parking lot as he arrives to the arena.

Charlotte Flair vs Bayley

Before the match begins Charlotte grabs the mic and asks Bayley what happened to her. Charlotte says Bayley has become a stepping stone while she is still the measuring stick. Charlotte says after beating Bayley she will challenge Iyo Sky at Fastlane.

The match officially begins with Bayley attacking Charlotte in a rage. Charlotte gets the better of Bayley but Iyo Sky tips up Charlotte by grabbing her leg. Bayley hits an elbow drop from off the apron to Charlotte on the outside.

*Commercial break*

SmackDown returns live with Charlotte hitting a series of chops to Bayley. Charlotte then hits a fall away slam. Charlotte hits her signature lariat and covers for two. Charlotte climbs to the top rope but is tripped up by Bayley. Charlotte hits a spear and then covers Bayley for the three count to end this match very abruptly.

After the match Bayley grabs the mic and says tonight she said Damage CTRL will end Charlotte and they will. Damage CTRL get on the ring apron but Asuka runs out to make the save. Asuka screams at Bayley in Japanese. Bayley says if Asuka wants a triple threat match with her, Iyo Sky and Charlotte at Fastlane, then she’s got it. Iyo Sky and Dakota Kai object to Bayley making the match as it would appear that is not at all what Asuka said.

SmackDown returns live with John Cena making his entrance with a contract in hand. Cena says last week he came back to compete and he wants a match. Cena says he does not have a partner and tonight he has a choice, he can rip up the contract and pretend none of this ever happened, or he can stand and fight. Cena says that he will honor the contract and if he doesn’t find a partner by Fastlane he will fight the Bloodline by himself in a handicap match.

Cena is interrupted by Jimmy Uso and Solo Sikoa coming out to the ring. Jimmy says Cena will not make it to Fastlane and Cena immediately attacks Jimmy and calls out Sikoa to get in the ring. Sikoa enters the ring and Cena lifts Sikoa for the AA but Jimmy hits with a superkick. Sikoa hits Cena with the Umaga splash. Jimmy Uso clears off the announce table and places Cena on the table. Sikoa stops Jimmy from climbing up top and goes up himself.

Making the save for Cena is….LA Knight who runs out to the ring with a monstrous pop from the crowd. Knight plants Sikoa with a BFT. LA Knight hits Jimmy with an elbow drop along with the loudest LA Knight chant yet. LA Knight then picks up the contract and signs it to make himself John Cena’s partner.
