Sean Sapp reported behind Fightful’s paywall that, “Rey Mysterio sustained a legitimate injury on SmackDown.” It seems that this wasn’t all a part of the show after all. Santos Escobar was always supposed to win the match, but the finish was changed.

Fightful sources confirmed late Friday that Rey Mysterios spot on Smackdown was not storyline as originally suspected. We’ve learned that Santos Escobar was actually supposed to win the match clean, and an audible was called and the match was ended.

It was also noted that, “in addition, there was a backstage segment follow up that was planned that had to he nixed.” We’re hoping for the best in this situation.

Rey Mysterio’s injury took place when Santos Escobar landed a suicide dive on the outside. Mysterio fell back and it appeared that he either hit his head, or he suffered whiplash, as they noted on commentary during SmackDown.

You never know what can happen in the ring, and apparently, things just didn’t go as planned at all this week for Rey Mysterio on SmackDown. Now Santos Escobar will face Austin Theory for the United States Title in two weeks.
