The wrestling world lost an all-time great in Jay Briscoe. The tag team specialist passed away in a car accident on Tuesday. His untimely passing led to an outpouring of support and prayers on social media. His unfortunate death led to WWE nixing an angle on NXT this week, and it seems Shawn Michaels was the one who made the call.

It was previously reported that NXT planned a funeral segment on this week’s show featuring The New Day. However, WWE scrapped that segment in light of Jay Briscoe’s unfortunate demise.

WWE NXT saw the New Day come out to the ring this week wearing suits. Xavier Woods and Kofi Kingston didn’t do any funeral bits, and they just cut a very normal promo instead.

While speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer revealed that it was Shawn Michaels who made the call to nix the aforementioned funeral segment on this week’s episode of NXT.

“This was supposed to be a funeral segment, and they realized literally minutes before this thing started when they found out about Jay Briscoe.

They made the call to switch it because they knew it would be in really bad taste which is in fact so different from WWE in similar situations in the past. It was Shawn’s call.”

Shawn Michaels has been Senior Vice President of Talent Development Creative since September 2022. He is responsible for the creative direction and talent development in NXT, which is why he made that decision in the first place. We’ll have to see what WWE has planned for The New Day in the coming weeks, but that segment on NXT still set up their three-way match at Vengeance Day.
