AEW and NJPW are getting ready for the massive Forbidden Door pay-per-view. The gigantic inter-promotional show is less than month away. On last night’s Dynamite, the first match was officially announced between CM Punk and Hiroshi Tanahashi for the AEW World Championship.
On the NJPW side, the top title is the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship. That belt is currently around the waist of the legendary Kazuchika Okada. Fans have been wondering if Okada will defend at Forbidden Door.
On today’s Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer talked about the plans for Okada’s championship. Dave said he saw a lineup that included the Punk vs Tanahashi bout, but also one other interesting listing. “Hangman” Adam Page is planned to face Kazuchika Okada for the IWGP crown.
“The IWGP Title match won’t be able to be announced until the show on the 15th in St. Louis, 11 days before the show. I had seen a lineup which was interesting because it was Punk & Tanahashi for the AEW Title, and the other match was Okada & Adam Page which actually could be a hell of a match for the IWGP Title.
I don’t know if that will happen, change, or whatever. Then the rest of the show is probably a lot of tag matches between factions on each side.”
Hangman Page being slotted in a major championship match after losing the AEW title to Punk at Double or Nothing should be a huge boost. Page chased the AEW championship from his first day in the company. With that story told, he will now go on to challenge for Japan’s biggest wrestling prize.
