WWE chose to vacate the Women’s Tag Team Championships after Sasha Banks and Naomi walked away from the company. The team was unhappy with the way the titles were being presented and handed them to John Laurinaitis before leaving the arena. WWE announced on SmackDown that a tournament will be held to crown new champions shortly.

There is a major lack of depth in the women’s tag team division. As of right now, there are only two established teams on the main roster. Natalya and Shayna Baszler vs Nikki ASH and Doudrop would not make much for a tournament.

On the latest Wrestling Observer Radio, Bryan Alvarez discussed the upcoming tournament for the women’s tag team titles. He and Dave Meltzer spoke about how the options for an opponent for Ronda Rousey are limited because the company promised to put together a tournament. When Alvarez suggested icing the titles, Dave said that was not a likely option.

“You gotta have at least four, right? You’ve got to have at least four. The only real team is Nattie and Shayna Baszler.

That, they can’t do. They’re not going to. Not after that speech. They said that they have to do a tournament now. They said it, so now they have to do a tournament.”

WWE will now have to come up with several new teams to crown new champions. That could prove challenging, as both Ronda Rousey and Bianca Belair will need fresh opponents going forward. There could be some major shakeups in WWE’s plans coming soon.
