WWE’s Rapid Camera Cuts Wasn’t A Kevin Dunn Idea

WWE has received a lot of criticism for the way their television shows are shot. There are frequent, often jarring, and unnecessary camera cuts that sometimes cause fans to miss out on the action. While WWE is the apex of pro wrestling television production, this practice drives many viewers crazy.

Most have pointed the finger at WWE EVP for Television Production Kevin Dunn. Dunn receives most of the fan ire when things don’t look the way viewers want them to. In the case of the quick camera cuts, a former WWE employee in a similar position says the blame lies squarely with him.

Former WWE VP of Global TV Production Mike Mansury recently spoke with Conrad Thompson. During the chat, he explained that Kevin Dunn was not responsible for the fast cuts. The idea was to make things seem chaotic when the newly-formed Shield faction was on the screen.

“I will choose to protect the nameless person, but I will say the rapid camera cutting, to my recollection, that came into play when The Shield debuted. The whole purpose behind it, was to make what you see on-screen with the three characters of The Shield and the push, was to make it seem all that more chaotic. At the time, it worked.

I can see now, after so many years of doing it, a lot of viewers feel like they’re on a queasy thrill ride, but that was the intent of it initially. A lot of it is done to protect the magic. You don’t want to expose the business. A big part of the business is how it’s done on TV. If you’re exposing the magic, you’re killing the fun for everybody. That’s the approach and the rapid camera cut situation, it was born out of creating and exciting and chaotic feel for when the Shield were doing the three-on-one beatdowns early in their run. It’s hard to break some habits, but shoutout to the gentleman who shares my initials who created that concept.”

Even the person who was responsible for WWE’s quick cuts has grown to hate them. Mansury left the company in May of 2020, so somebody else decided to stick with the practice. For those fans who want to continue to blame Kevin Dunn, they might want to look for the person with the initials “M.M.”
