Big E had a very brief run as WWE Champion. The New Day member won the title after cashing in his Money in the Bank briefcase on Bobby Lashley in September of 2021. A positive COVID-19 test for Roman Reigns nixed his match with Brock Lesnar at the Day 1 premium live event. Big E ended up losing the title on New Year’s Day.

Lesnar was shifted into a five-way match with Bobby Lashley, himself, Kevin Owens, Seth Rollins, and Big E. Lesnar won the match and Big E’s title just under three months E won it. Many fans were dumbfounded by the decision.

WWE has discussed putting the WWE Championship back on Big E at some point. That may not be the current plan, but it was talked about. Big E’s name has been thrown around internally as a potential WrestleMania main eventer, according to Dave Meltzer on the latest Wrestling Observer Radio.

“Originally, Brock was the only one who was going to beat Roman anyway. If that’s the idea, then I just think, it would be better for Big E… If they want Big E challenging for the title, which at one point was an idea, he needs the boost.

They beat him a couple times, theoretically with the idea that it doesn’t matter, because, you know, they’ll rebuild him. And what’s a better way to rebuild him than in that spot?”

We’ll see how things go with the WWE Championship starting tonight at the Royal Rumble. Brock Lesnar will defend the title against Bobby Lashley in a highly anticipated war. With WrestleMania season officially kicking off today, the WWE Universe is in for a roller coaster ride for the next few months.
