Hikaru Shida recently took a horrible beating from AEW rival Serena Deeb. On the most recent episode of Dynamite, Shida had her knee worked over by Serena. The referee had to call for a match stoppage after Deeb placed Hikaru Shida in a half-crab. The storyline injury looks like it’ll keep Shida out of action for a while.

AEW is selling it as a serious injury. The reason for the angle is simple. Shida was planning to return to Japan sometime in February. It appears she made the trip a little earlier than expected.

Dave Meltzer mentioned the reason for the angle in this week’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter. Shida is taking some time off to go back to Japan. The injury angle writes her off of television for that time period.

“After the Deeb injury angle on Dynamite, Shida has returned to Japan for a while.”

There is no known date for Hikaru Shida to return to the United States. AEW fans will have to play a waiting game. Shida will likely be refocused and ready to try and recapture the AEW Women’s World Championship.

The AEW women’s division leaned heavily on Shida during the fanless pandemic days. The Japanese star has been a pleasure to watch in Tony Khan’s organization. Hopefully she has a fun and safe trip home!
