Matt Hardy is a true veteran in the pro wrestling world, having worked in various promotions in his career. He is currently under his Big Money Matt persona in AEW and remains a highlight. It seems he opened up about the failure of his Broken gimmick.

Matt Hardy made his shocking debut in AEW last year in March and immediately started a feud with Chris Jericho and the Inner Circle. The feud would feature a segment where Hardy teleported to various places in the arena. Unfortunately, his Broken gimmick simply never took off in the company.

While speaking with EssentiallySports, Matt Hardy was asked why his character, Broken Matt Hardy, failed in AEW. Hardy attributed the lack of live crowds due to the COVID-19 pandemic as the reason.

“The Broken Matt Hardy character is a very fan driven character. It was just very hard for it to work as it should have without fans in the venue. Obviously the whole world was in the midst of this pandemic, so we just changed courses and I went to a more reality based character in Big Money Matt. We took a step back from Broken Matt, and who knows? Maybe now that fans are back, you’ll see Broken Matt again down the road.”

Matt Hardy is certainly happy working in AEW and that is unlikely to change anytime soon. It is likely his contributions to the pro wrestling world will never be forgotten either and he will be remembered as a legend in the business.
