2020 was a very interesting year for WWE. They were able to keep the show going through the pandemic, but they also broke a long-standing record in the process. This is a record that WWE likely didn’t necessarily want to break.

John Cena is very busy with his other Hollywood commitments, but he was able to work a Firefly Fun House match against Bray Wyatt at WrestleMania 36. He only made SmackDown appearances during the build for that feud. It also helped increase interest on FOX.

2020 was the first year since 2004 that John Cena didn’t appear on a single episode of WWE Raw. Maybe 2021 will see a return for Cena to the longest running weekly episodic television program.

It’s unclear when John Cena will return. They have typically brought him back around Royal Rumble time for the road to WrestleMania. So far nobody is dropping any hints that his return is coming. The only Superstar who really mentions Cena anymore is R-Truth as he regards the 16x Champ as his childhood hero.

I love pro wrestling and hate BS. These two things drive me. Years of experience in writing, journalism, and digging exclusive insider info for Ringside News. Worked in finance before realizing pro wrestling journalism made much less sense. Pro beachballs at pro wrestling shows, pro dives if someone catches, anti bullies, olives, and pineapples on pizza.
