AEW and WWE NXT both had COVID-19 outbreaks at around the same time. They were able to take care of the situation and book around it. Those who needed to quarantine did so, but there is blame placed on the two companies having stars who socialize with each other.

During Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer noted that the belief in AEW is that their stars contracted COVID-19 after socializing with NXT Superstars since so many of them hang out outside of their professional lives. It was also noted that Lance Archer didn’t get COVD-19 from any NXT Superstar, so there are obviously other ways to contract the virus.

“The feeling is still that the bubble environment is the only way to do this safely. AEW has had one outbreak which they blame on wrestlers socializing and things like that with WWE talent because it started there, however it happened. Lance Archer obviously didn’t get it from WWE talent, so it’s more than that. There are a lot of ways to get it. It’ just going to be a really tense time with everything.”

AEW and WWE can both run shows at full capacity now, but that doesn’t mean it will happen immediately. Florida re-opening into their third phase gives them the freedom to bring in as many fans as they like. They also need to be very aware of the risks they run by operating during a pandemic.
