COVID-19 has drastically changed the affairs of the world for the worse in the first half of 2020. Mega events that require a large chunk of a nation’s economy like the Olympics have not been exempted from this either.

The Tokyo Summer Olympic Games that were scheduled to take place this year were postponed to 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Now, IOC President Thomas Bach states that the Tokyo Olympic Games “must happen” in 2021, or else they will have to be scrapped altogether.

Bach revealed that the IOC is working ardently for the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2021 but the future of the world is uncertain and therefore they’ll have to prepare for multiple scenarios.

He also said that preparing for all the different scenarios is a “mammoth task” and that appropriate decisions will only be made after the IOC receives a clear view of what the world will look like on July 23, 2021.
