AEW Dynamite Results – January 1, 2020

Welcome to Ringside News’ results for AEW Dynamite, the first Dynamite of 2020!

After a week long break, AEW returns on New Year’s Day with an action-packed episode. Cody will be in action tonight against Darby Allin. This marks the second time the two have fought in AEW but tonight Cody will have the Enforcer, Arn Anderson in his corner. Can Cody get back on the right track before facing MJF in February? We find out tonight!

Elsewhere tonight, Riho defends her Women’s Championship against Hikaru Shida, Nyla Rose, and Britt Baker in a Fatal 4-Way, Kenny Omega will team with The Young Bucks to face The Lucha Bros and PAC in a six-man tag match, Sammy Guevara faces Dustin Rhodes, and Jon Moxley will face Trent.

AEW looks to start 2020 on the right foot, and it should be a fun show. Remember to download the Ringside News app, and follow us on Instagram and Twitter. Enjoy the show!

The first AEW of 2020 opens with a video package that shows The Elite being beaten down since the first show until now. It’s suggesting The Elite might be on its last legs.

We go live to the arena, which has a slightly different look this week with the entrance diagonal to the ring. The announcers – Tazz is filling in for Schiavone this week – run down the card for tonight.

Darby Allin comes out with musician Ghostmane, who is wearing a Cody mask, then walks to the back. Cody is out second, accompanied by Arn Anderson, who is the “head coach of the Nightmare family”. Everybody’s wins and losses records have been wiped clean for the new year.

Cody w/arn anderson vs. darby allin

The match begins and there’s a feeling-out process. They lock-up and Cody takes a headlock, gets shot off, and drops Allin with a shoulder. They lock-up again and this time Allin rolls-up Cody with a crucifix pin, Cody kicks out, and they exchange pin attempts for a minute.

Cody takes a second to get some advice from Anderson at ringside. Allin hits a springboard coffin drop but Cody counters him. Allin looks for a float-over stunner but Cody throws him off and they’re at a stalemate again. Cody forearms Darby in the face and throws him into the ring post and he falls to the floor.

Cody goes to the apron but Allin swipes his feet and he crashes. Allin gets back in the ring and connects with the springboard coffin drop. Cody rolls from the ring but Allin hits a suicide dive, turning sideways as he did so. Cody acts like his shoulder is dislocated and hits it off the ringpost to put it back in. Allin gets on the apron and Cody hits the disaster kick, then takes a minute to regroup.

Allin gets in the ring and starts targeting the shoulder of Cody, slamming it into the corner. Cody applies a Figure Four leglock but Allin reverses the pressure, only for Rhodes to switch it back and Darby grabs the rope. Darby dropkicks Cody shoulder-first into the buckles. Allin applies a Fujiwara armbar to Cody.

Cody counters a slam to throw Allin over the ropes but he lands on his feet. Darby comes back in but gets caught with a powerslam. Cody puts Darby in the corner and unloads ten punches before hitting the Cody Cutter. Rhodes throws his weight belt into the crowd, then stomps the leg of Allin. Cody puts Darby on the top rope and hits a reverse superplex for a near-fall.

We return to find Darby getting to his feet and Cody down – during the break Allin hit a Code Red from the top rope for a near-fall. Allin hits a float-over Stunner, then heads to the top rope. Cody rolls to the apron to get away…but Allin hits the Coffin Drop to Cody on the apron! Both men are down at ringside.

They slowly get back in the ring and Cody looks for the springboard cutter again but Allin avoids it. Allin looks for the Stunner again but Cody counters with the CrossRhodes….but Allin kicks out! Cody runs for a splash in the corner but hits an exposed buckle thanks to Allin. Darby heads up top and looks for the Coffin Drop but Cody gets his knees up – which Anderson instructed him to do – and pins him for the win!

Winner: Cody

We go backstage for an interview with SCU. Scorpio Sky says everybody wants a piece of them, including The Dark Order. One thing he knows for sure though, nobody likes it when spooky perverts ruin your main event. Kazarian says Santana and Ortiz will be put on notice as well. Sammy Guevara walks up and says he doesn’t think so, he thinks Proud & Powerful will take the titles. Guevara points to Christopher Daniels and asks what he provides, anything but losses? Daniels says if he wants to know they can go face-to-face next week. Sammy agrees and Daniels messes with his phone.

It’s title match time between the women in AEW. Nyla Rose is out first, though one has to wonder how she got this opportunity when she was suspended for attacking an official.

AEW Women’s Championship

Fatal 4-Way Match

(C) Riho Vs. Nyla Rose Vs. Hikaru Shida Vs. Dr. Britt Baker

As Riho enters the ring, Nyla Rose blindsides the Champion. Shida grabs a Kendo stick and hits Rose twice, then the referee inexplicably rings the bell to start the match. Rose knees Rose and sends her from the ring. Shida tries to arm drag Riho but she cartwheels through it and kicks Shida. Riho whips Baker to the corner but Shida kicks the Champion and whips her into Baker.

Shida is dragged from the ring by Nyla, who beats her down, then pulls out a table. As usual, AEW just forgoes the rulebook. Rose and Shida brawl around the table until Riho dives with a crossbody from the top onto Shida. Rose then slams Riho’s head into the table and looks to put her through it, but Shida prevents.

Back live and Rose looks to powerbomb Shida but she counters it with a back drop. Shida lifts Nyla and tries to suplex her but Rose dumps her on the top rope. Rose heads up top and and leaps with a knee to the draped Shida. Rose lifts Shida onto the table at ringside, and hits a senton through it.

Rose looks to get back in the ring but Baker hits her with a draping DDT for a two-count. Baker tries to apply Lockjaw but Nyla elbows her off. Baker gets Nyla in a triangle sleeper but Rose lifts and slams her. Riho comes back in with a flurry of attacks to Rose, then climbs up top for a double stomp. She pins Rose but Baker superkicks her to break it. Baker drags Riho to the corner and climbs the ropes but Shida returns – totally fine – and superplexes her.

Shida knocks Rose into the corner, then suplexes Riho into her! Shida lifts Baker and hits the fireman’s carry backbreaker but Rose German suplexes her before she can pin. Rose climbs to the top for a senton but nobody’s home. Shida grabs Rose and hits a Michonoku driver for a near-fall. Baker catches Shida with a superkick, then applies Lockjaw but gets rolled-up for a near-fall. Riho rolls-up Baker for the win.

Winner: Riho

After the match, Riho is celebrating when Nyla Rose attacks her. She brings a table into the ring and puts the Champion on it, then splashes her from the top rope through it! Next week, Riho will defend her Championship against Kris Statlander, the alien.

Joey Janela is interviewed backstage and he gets low-blowed from behind by Kip Sabian’s girlfriend, Penelope Ford. Sabian then approaches and smiles before walking off with Ford.
