WWE is a very frustrating product to watch sometimes because Vince McMahon loves to change things all of the time. This idea of “plans changed” has actually become a running joke backstage as well as with fans. However, WWE does map out their stories well in advance according to Stephanie McMahon.

While speaking to the Sports Business Journal, Stephanie McMahon said that WWE plans their stories one year in advance. However, there is always the possibility that things will change which she said is “inevitable.”

“[WWE] tries to have a basic plan with their script a year out, but inevitably, things happen and stories change. Another beautiful thing about WWE is because we are live 52 weeks a year, we have no off season, we have no reruns, and we essentially have a live focus group every single night at these live events telling us what’s working, what’s not working, and what they don’t care about so we can shift our plans as needed.”

It might be hard to believe that WWE actually tries to project their storylines that far in advance, but it’s not unheard of. After all, NJPW’s booker Gedo plans their angles two years ahead of time.

The WrestleMania main events for 33 and 34 were mapped out about a year ahead of the show and even though Becky Lynch was added to Main 35’s main event the plan was for Charlotte Flair vs Ronda Rousey to close out the show of shows for a while as well.

You can never predict who the fans will latch onto and demand a better spot on the card. It is good that WWE seems to be listening to those fans as well. However, there does seem to be a master plan, but we’re just not privy to it until we hear about what that plan was and how it changed later on.
