2 Cold Scorpio is officially heading to trial, with the former WWE, WCW and ECW star facing serious charges tied to a violent 2024 incident at a Missouri truck stop.
Several subpoenas were issued during Thursday’s pretrial hearing for witnesses expected to testify, but there were no other major developments. Scorpio, whose real name is Charles Scaggs, is scheduled to stand trial on August 3 on charges of first-degree assault and armed criminal action.
The case stems from a June 15, 2024 altercation at the Love’s Travel Stop in Kansas City, where Scaggs was working as a security guard. The confrontation allegedly began around 3:40 a.m. after Scaggs told a customer to put out a cigarette inside the building.
The man claimed he believed the cigarette was already extinguished, although he acknowledged that it may not have been completely out. Scaggs told authorities the man responded, “What are you going to do?” before the situation turned physical outside.
Scaggs told police that he pulled a knife and stabbed the man in self-defense. According to the account published by TMZ at the time, the fight continued after the first stabbing.
“During the scuffle, Scaggs told authorities he pulled a knife from his pocket and stabbed the guy in self-defense. The wrestler said the altercation went on for several more moments, and in the squabble, he got in a few more stabs too.”
Police said the alleged victim was found on the ground with numerous injuries and was transported to a hospital while drifting in and out of consciousness. Investigators later said the man accused Scaggs of being the aggressor. Kansas City Police Sergeant Phil DiMartino issued a statement following the arrest.
“On June 15, 2024, at 3:40 a.m., officers were dispatched to 3201 Ameristar Drive on a reported cutting. Officers contacted the victim and suspect. The victim had numerous cut and stab wounds and was transported to the hospital for treatment. The suspect was arrested at the scene.”
Scaggs, 60, pleaded not guilty. The trial has already been delayed multiple times, including an October 2025 postponement after prosecutors learned the identity of a person who allegedly filmed the altercation. The prosecution already knew footage existed but said it needed additional time to interview or depose the person who recorded it. A later delay was granted at the request of Scaggs’ legal team.
Scorpio competed across WWE, WCW, ECW, New Japan Pro Wrestling and Pro Wrestling NOAH during his career. He also held the ECW World Television Championship and captured the ECW World Tag Team Championship with The Sandman. He has wrestled only a handful of times since his arrest, while former ECW names including Tod Gordon, The Sandman and Bill Alfonso have helped raise money for his legal defense.
The long-delayed case will now move toward a jury trial, where prosecutors and Scaggs’ defense will present their versions of what happened during the early-morning confrontation.
