Zelina Vega didn’t just wake up one day with her darker WWE persona — she says the idea has actually been years in the works, dating all the way back to her NXT days with Aleister Black.
While speaking with Denise Salcedo in Las Vegas, Vega was asked about her darker entrance presentation and the spooky vibe that has become part of her on-screen presence. That led to her opening up about where the character inspiration came from and how long she has been waiting to fully bring it to life.
Vega explained that her love for gothic and supernatural characters played a big role in shaping the direction she wanted to take, especially drawing influence from iconic pop culture figures. She made it clear this wasn’t something thrown together recently, but rather a concept she and Aleister Black had talked about for years before it finally became reality on WWE television.
“Yeah. Well, so everybody knows that I love Akasha from Queen of the Damned. So that's a huge, huge influence for me when it comes to this character. But I've been wanting to do this character. Him and I have been talking about this since NXT. So this has been something in the making for a while.”
She also revealed that WWE leadership played a role in refining how the character was presented on-screen, particularly when it came to the entrance itself. Vega credited Triple H with helping shape the visual side of her presentation, which helped bring her long-term vision closer to what fans now see on television.
“However, the entrance part, Triple H did help me with. So to see him do that was very cool.”
Vega continued explaining how she blends different inspirations into her presentation, including influences from video games and film, which allow her to lean into her personality while still evolving her look into something darker and more theatrical.
“But yeah, it's just like getting influences from Akasha or even Sindel from Mortal Kombat and just kind of blending the world is like a fun thing for me because I still get to keep my nerdy geeky side but in a darker way.”
This revelation adds more depth to Vega’s current presentation, showing that her character direction wasn’t a sudden creative shift but something she had envisioned for years. It also shows how WWE sometimes revisits ideas talent have held onto since their earlier days, especially when the timing finally lines up.
Now that her darker persona is fully taking shape on WWE programming, it will be interesting to see how far Vega takes the character and whether it leads to bigger opportunities as her presentation continues to evolve.
