WWE apparently had something very different planned for Crown Jewel before landing on the World Tag Team Title match between Bron Breakker and Austin Theory against Penta and Je’Von Evans. The original idea would have added two more heavy hitters to the mix.
According to Dave Meltzer in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, WWE originally planned a six-man tag team match featuring Penta, Evans and Oba Femi against Breakker, Theory and Bronson Reed at the Premium Live Event.
That obviously would have put a lot more beef into the match, with Femi and Reed joining the ongoing issues between Penta and Evans and The Vision. But WWE eventually decided there was one pretty obvious problem with doing that match first. Meltzer reported that WWE felt it simply didn’t make sense to run the six-man tag before actually paying off the World Tag Team Title match between the two teams.
That’s how Crown Jewel ended up with Breakker and Theory defending their titles against Penta and Evans instead. The two teams have already been going at each other for weeks, and Penta and Evans previously picked up a non-title victory over the champions.
The change also leaves Femi and Reed out of the equation for now, but the original plan certainly gives WWE an easy match to circle back to later. If the issues between everyone involved keep going after Crown Jewel, that six-man tag is already sitting there waiting to happen.
