WWE still has not locked down major details for the John Cena Classic, but a new backstage update is giving fans a better idea of where things currently stand.
According to WrestleVotes Radio on Fightful Select, the project remains very early in development despite the buzz surrounding John Cena’s announcement at WWE Backlash 2026. After speaking with sources following the reveal of the concept, Fightful Select noted that WWE still has not finalized the event’s location, structure, or official date. It was also said multiple sources indicated there is currently no finalized venue or timetable attached to the project yet.
“After speaking with sources following the announcement of the John Cena Classic, no date or venue seemed to be nailed down, according to Wrestlevotes Radio on Fightful Select.”
One source pointed toward early December potentially making the most sense for WWE’s schedule because it would line up closely with the one-year anniversary of Cena’s final match.
“One source that Wrestlevotes spoke with said that an early December time frame would make logistical sense with WWE's calendar, and the one year anniversary of John Cena's final match.”
The update also revealed that Netflix showed immediate interest in carrying the event after Cena first announced the concept, although discussions are still ongoing internally. Fightful Select further noted just how fluid the entire project still is behind the scenes.
“A source also said that Netflix almost immediately expressed interest in hosting the event on its platform, which has not been finalized.”
“Very little about the concept has been locked in at this stage.”
The backstage update comes shortly after Cena himself discussed the project during an appearance on Adam’s Apple, where he made it clear this is something deeply personal to him and not simply another WWE-created concept. Cena explained that the John Cena Classic is something he personally envisioned a long time ago and admitted WWE is still figuring out exactly what it will become.
“Oh my god, I’m super excited. It’s awesome. It’s something I’ve been thinking about for a long time, and again, we’re still working things out—and I like that. I like that it’s a work in progress, but this is absolutely from me.”
Cena also opened up about the purpose behind the project, explaining that he wants to create a platform for younger wrestlers to prove themselves under pressure just like he once did early in his own career.
“I like turning the radar off, and I like seeing what people can do. I like seeing potential when the bright lights are on, and maybe that’s the nucleus of the John Cena Classic. It’s how I got my start.”
Ever since Cena first unveiled the idea at Backlash 2026, fans have been trying to figure out exactly what the John Cena Classic will look like. Whether it becomes a tournament, showcase event, or something completely different, WWE still appears to be shaping the concept internally while outside interest continues growing.
