WWE SmackDown’s three-hour run now has a clearer expiration date, and it sounds like this format switch is going to become a yearly routine.
Reports stated that SmackDown was expected to leave the three-hour format and return to two hours within a few weeks. That added to what Bryan Alvarez had already suggested on The Bryan and Vinny Show, where he said the longer runtime appeared to be temporary, just like it was in 2025.
Now Dave Meltzer has provided the most specific update yet on Wrestling Observer Radio, revealing that SmackDown is expected to move back to two hours either in the final week of June or the first week of July. Meltzer said he believes the first week of July is the more likely timing.
“It’ll go either the last week of June or the first week in July, I believe it’s the first week of July. The contract that they have signed now is January until the end of June would be three hours, then the first of July to the end of December would be two hours, so that’s the way the deal is structured right now.”
That means the current three-hour version of SmackDown is not being dropped because of a sudden creative change. According to Meltzer, the schedule is built into the deal itself: January through the end of June gets three hours, while July through December goes back to the usual two-hour format. When Bryan Alvarez followed up and asked whether that structure is expected to continue going forward, Meltzer confirmed this isn’t just a one-year experiment.
“For the foreseeable future, yeah. Probably for the next four years.”
So the takeaway is pretty clear: SmackDown is expected to return to two hours around early July, but the three-hour format is not dead. If the structure holds, the show will expand again in January 2027 and keep following that same first-half/second-half pattern for years.
Bottom line: SmackDown’s runtime isn’t just changing, it’s being scheduled like a seasonal reset. WWE gets the extra hour during the first half of the year, then trims the show back down after June. That means fans complaining about three hours may get relief soon, but only until January rolls around again.
