Roman Reigns may not be facing El Grande Americano after all. Just one day after rumors suggested El Grande was the favorite to challenge the World Heavyweight Champion in WWE’s upcoming AAA crossover tournament, that rumor has already been shot down.
Speaking on the August 6 edition of Wrestling Observer Live, Bryan Alvarez revealed that WWE has denied the rumor linking El Grande Americano to the title match in Mexico City.
“An update from yesterday. WWE is claiming it is NOT going to be Roman Reigns and El Grande.”
Alvarez pointed out that if El Grande were still the planned winner, denying the report would make little sense. Instead, Alvarez named a couple of other possibilities that could be in line for the title opportunity.
“So if El Grande is in the tournament, they just spoiled their own tournament. Roman Reigns vs. Penta is possible for that Mexico City Raw. Could be Dragon Lee.”
Whoever it ends up being, Alvarez says WWE’s current thinking is to give a hometown star the focus—even if that wrestler ultimately comes up short against Reigns.
“Some Mexican is going to get a rub by losing to Roman Reigns, they say.”
This comes after WWE announced a cross-promotional tournament to crown Reigns’ challenger for the September 14 edition of RAW in Mexico City. The field still hasn’t been revealed, and if this information is accurate, neither has the winner.
