Roman Reigns may already have his first challenger lined up for WWE’s historic AAA crossover. After WWE announced a tournament featuring stars from RAW, SmackDown and AAA to determine who will challenge the World Heavyweight Champion on the September 14 edition of RAW in Mexico City, the company already has a favorite—although nothing is locked in.
Speaking on Wrestling Observer Live, Alvarez revealed that El Grande Americano is currently expected to emerge from the tournament and face Reigns for the title. However, he stressed that WWE could still change its plans before the tournament reaches its conclusion.
“The list of competitors has not been announced. I can tell you this, guys. The opponent, not locked in, is El Grande Americano. That can certainly change.”
Bryan Alvarez also isn’t convinced that’s the finish WWE should go with if the current plans stick.
“I don’t think Roman Reigns should beat El Grande. They can always use some schmoz finish.”
The report comes less than 24 hours after WWE officially revealed why Rey Mysterio approached Reigns backstage on the August 3 episode of RAW.
After leaving fans wondering what the WWE Hall of Famer wanted to “run by” the Tribal Chief, WWE later confirmed that Mysterio had been putting together a historic cross-promotional tournament featuring luchadores from RAW, SmackDown and AAA. The winner will earn a World Heavyweight Championship match against Reigns on the September 14 edition of RAW from Mexico City.
Whether El Grande Americano ultimately reaches the finals remains to be seen, but if Alvarez’s information is accurate, the road to Roman Reigns’ first major AAA crossover title defense may already have its intended destination.
