WWE apparently wants more Cathy Kelley, and not necessarily just standing backstage with a microphone. Her work over the past several months has caught the company’s attention enough that WWE is now looking at other ways to use her.
According to WrestleVotes Radio on Fightful Select, WWE has been impressed with Cathy Kelley lately and wants to expand her role beyond what fans currently see from her as a backstage correspondent.
“It has been relayed to us that WWE has been impressed as of late with the work of Cathy Kelley and that the company would like to find additional roles for her outside of her current backstage correspondent position on television.”
Kelley has stood out internally, with her personality and ability to connect with people becoming a big part of why WWE sees more potential there.
“Kelley, who by all accounts is well-liked and extremely engaging, has stood out over the course of the last few months.”
One idea already being discussed would put Kelley much deeper into WWE’s digital side. The company has considered making her a focal point of upcoming social media campaigns while also giving her a major role with the social side of Club WWE.
“We’re told WWE has considered making her a focal point of upcoming social media campaigns while also having her take on a significant role within the social aspects of Club WWE.”
The thinking is pretty straightforward. WWE apparently believes Kelley has strengths that go beyond interviewing wrestlers for a few minutes on television and wants to find more places to use them.
“The feeling within is that WWE sees an opportunity to utilize Kelley’s strengths beyond her current television role and continue expanding her presence across the company’s digital platforms.”
TC was fully behind the idea and brought up another reason WWE may want to keep giving Kelley more to do. People in similar positions have eventually moved on. He specifically pointed to Kayla Braxton and Renee Young, arguing that WWE shouldn’t leave Kelley in one position long enough that bigger opportunities elsewhere start looking attractive.
“I don’t want them to not give Cathy more opportunities here and have her walk out that door to explore what else is out there. If you’re a popular interviewer like that, you really could go anywhere and do anything with it.”
That doesn’t mean there’s any indication Kelley actually wants out. TC stressed the opposite, saying he believes she enjoys WWE and wrestling. His point was simply that someone with her ability should continue getting new challenges rather than staying in the same spot indefinitely.
“I think Cathy likes being in WWE. I think she likes wrestling. I think she likes everyone around her. I don’t think she ever wants to leave, but I think you also have to give more and more to people like that and not just kind of have them complacent in one spot.”
The timing is interesting because Kelley has already talked about wanting to do more herself. She recently told Chris Van Vliet that she isn’t particularly interested in wrestling a full match, but becoming a manager is something she has wanted to explore for years.
“I don’t think I would want to have a match. I’ve expressed in the past that I do want to get more involved in some capacity. I would love to be a manager—I don’t know who for.”
There’s nothing suggesting WWE is specifically considering that manager idea right now. The discussions reported by WrestleVotes are centered on social media, Club WWE and expanding Kelley’s presence beyond her existing television job.
Kelley has wanted to stretch beyond backstage interviews, and WWE now apparently wants to give her more room to do exactly that. Whether it stays on the digital side or eventually spills into something bigger on television is the part still left to figure out.
