John Cena has confirmed the John Cena Classic is coming this December, but exactly when it will happen is apparently still being worked out. Now, a new backstage update suggests the company is weighing a couple of different options before making a final decision.
During a recent Q&A session, WrestleVotes was asked whether the John Cena Classic would take place as part of WrestlePalooza. According to the update, that’s not expected to happen despite the rumors that have been floating around.
“I know that’s the rumor out there, but I don’t believe so.”
Instead, WrestleVotes said WWE has internally discussed two different possibilities. One would see the John Cena Classic run head-to-head with AEW Worlds End on December 19, while the other would turn December 12 into a huge day by holding WrestlePalooza overseas before bringing the John Cena Classic to the United States later that same day.
“We’ve been hearing some speculation that they would potentially run against Worlds End on December 19th. Also, potentially make December 12th a giant day where, in the morning, you can have WrestlePalooza, and once you get to 12 hours here in the US, have the John Cena Classic. A bit of double-dipping.”
As of now, though, it doesn’t sound like WWE has made its final call. WrestleVotes stressed that while both ideas have been discussed, one thing he’s heard is that the John Cena Classic isn’t expected to be part of WrestlePalooza itself.
“Don’t know which one of those will prevail, but the Cena Classic won’t happen at WrestlePalooza.”
Either way, it sounds like WWE is looking at the John Cena Classic as one of its biggest attractions of the year. Whether it lands on December 12 or December 19, all signs point to the tournament being positioned as a major event rather than just another stop on the calendar.
Do you think WWE should run the John Cena Classic against AEW Worlds End, or would December 12 make for the better date? Let us know in the comments.
