The John Cena Classic is getting closer, and John Cena has now shared some of the biggest details yet about what fans can expect. Months after announcing the tournament, the 17-time world champion confirmed it’s still on track for December and revealed that WWE fans will play a major role in deciding the outcome.

Appearing on TODAY, Cena confirmed the tournament will take place in December 2026 before explaining the philosophy behind the event. Rather than simply creating another tournament, he said the goal is to build a live experience centered around the values that have defined his WWE career.

“This year in December, I’m really excited about announcing the John Cena Classic. So we’re gonna do an event, based off all the memory, all the nostalgia, the I.P. and the core values of the character which is me: Hustle, loyalty, respect, perseverance, virtue, overcoming the odds and giving the vote to the people.”

Cena also revealed one of the tournament’s most unique twists, confirming that the audience will decide who walks away as the inaugural John Cena Classic champion.

“Our audience is gonna decide our champion that night so it’s a really unique live event.”

Even with months of planning behind it, Cena admitted there’s still some uncertainty about how everything will play out. That’s something he’s embracing rather than avoiding.

“I don’t even know if it’s gonna work. I’m still taking bold chances in the WWE space and I’m proud to be helping the John Cena Classic.”

This also builds on previous reports that WWE is targeting December 12 for the John Cena Classic after Survivor Series, although the company has yet to officially announce a date or location. With Cena now confirming the tournament remains on schedule for December and revealing that fans will decide the champion, more details about WWE’s newest event are likely to follow in the weeks ahead.
