AEW brought Double or Nothing to the Louis Armstrong Stadium in Queens, New York. The event was one impressive matchup after another, as Tony Khan’s company impressed with their offering.
The Men’s Owen Hart Cup continued at Double or Nothing with a massive quarterfinal matchup between Samoa Joe and Will Ospreay. With a future world title opportunity tied to the tournament, the match carried major stakes before the bell even rang.
Will Ospreay started this match out by jumping Samoa Joe in the corner. Eventually, the two found themselves outside the ring, where Joe took control of things.
Joe brought his usual power-heavy style and slowed the pace whenever he could, while Ospreay relied on speed and explosive offense to survive. The crowd stayed behind Ospreay throughout the match as he kept finding ways to escape Joe’s submissions and counters.
Samoa Joe kicked out after a Styles Clash and a Hidden Blade. Then Joe hit a snap powerslam on Will Ospreay when he went for another Hidden Blade. Eventually, Samoa Joe had a Conquina Clutch locked onto Ospreay, but Will was able to fight on.
Samoa Joe kicked out at one after a Hidden Blade, but then Ospreay nailed a second one to win the match. That means Will Ospreay will advance in the Owen Hart Cup Tournament, making him one step closer to August 30, when the final match will go down at Wembley Stadium. Ospreay will face the winner of Mark Davis and Jungle Jack Perry in the semifinals.
The Men’s Owen Hart Tournament has become one of AEW’s most important yearly events, with past winners including Adam Cole, Ricky Starks, Bryan Danielson, and Hangman Page. A win here moves someone one step closer to adding their name to that list and getting a huge opportunity on one of AEW’s biggest events of the year.
