Vince Russo has one major problem with Roman Reigns facing Seth Rollins at SummerSlam—he doesn’t give a damn which one of them wins.
While discussing WWE’s SummerSlam main event on Russo’s Brand, the former WWE writer ripped into the company for putting two of its biggest stars in the ring without giving fans a real reason to choose a side.
Reigns and Rollins have more than a decade of history dating back to The Shield, but Russo believes WWE is relying on their names instead of building a story that makes the outcome matter. Russo said the match immediately falls apart when fans are left wondering why they should root for either man.
“The main event is Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins at SummerSlam. Ben, what do I care if either guy wins? I don’t know why I’m pulling for either guy. That’s it right there. This is your main event, and this main event is: who cares who wins?”
The criticism didn’t stop there. Russo also tore into the promo WWE used to push the match, arguing that the company built the feud around two of the biggest knocks against Reigns and Rollins.
Rollins called out Reigns for barely being around, while Reigns fired back by attacking Rollins’ injury history. Russo said that may be honest, but it does nothing to make either man look stronger heading into one of WWE’s biggest shows of the year.
“You’re going back to last week’s promo, and the promo is built on negatives that are not good for either guy. Seth is pointing out to Roman, ‘You’re never here,’ and Roman says, ‘You’re always hurt.’ Those are two negatives for your two top guys because they’re the truth.”
That leaves WWE trying to sell a massive SummerSlam main event with one star being accused of never showing up and the other being accused of constantly breaking down.
Russo’s point is simple: Reigns and Rollins may have the star power, the history and the resumes, but WWE still needs to give fans a reason to care about who wins when the bell rings.
