Vince Russo is clearing the air after his recent comments about The Rock. While he still believes he doesn’t get enough credit for helping shape Dwayne Johnson’s early WWE character, Russo says fans misunderstood one part of the story.
Speaking on The Coach and Bro Show on October 5, Russo made it clear that his comments were never meant as a shot at former WWE writer Brian Gewirtz, who later became one of The Rock’s closest creative partners in both wrestling and Hollywood.
“Bro, I wanna say this. I wanna make this clear. When I was telling that story about The Rock, there’s no heat with Brian at all. As a matter of fact, I had a couple of things to pitch a couple of years ago. I was talking to Brian, and he was very, very nice and respectful. I wanna make that clear, man. It was never a Brian thing at all.”
Russo’s clarification comes just days after he said he never watched a Rock movie because he still feels overlooked for the role he believes he played in developing Johnson’s character. During those comments, he contrasted his own experience with Gewirtz’s successful working relationship with The Rock, leading some fans to think he was blaming Gewirtz for how everything played out.
Russo says that wasn’t the case at all. Instead, he stressed that his issue has always been about not feeling his own contributions were acknowledged, while insisting he has nothing but respect for the way Gewirtz treated him whenever they’ve spoken.
