Vampiro’s retirement did not last long, because a weather disaster forced him right back into the ring.
The lucha legend was booked as the official host for Masked Republic’s MaskedMania event on Saturday, June 13 in Bangor, Maine. He was not advertised to wrestle, especially after taking part in a series of retirement matches in recent months.
Then the card started falling apart. Bad weather across the United States caused travel issues for several names, including Juventud Guerrera, who was unable to make it to Maine in time for the event. That left Masked Republic scrambling to reshuffle the lineup.
The biggest problem came when the promotion was left without an opponent for Sam Adonis. That is when Vampiro stepped in. According to PWInsider, Vampiro insisted on facing Adonis in the main event and answered an open challenge as a last-second surprise. The move was done to make sure fans still got a real main event despite the travel mess hitting the show.
So, yes, Vampiro may have been in retirement mode, but when MaskedMania needed someone to save the night, he put the boots back on in Bangor, Maine of all places.
It was not the plan going in, but it gave fans a surprise they definitely were not expecting. Vampiro showed up to host the show and ended up wrestling the main event.
