The Undertaker still has no clue why WWE never booked him against Sting, but he knows who stopped it from happening. In his eyes, Vince McMahon left an easy WrestleMania main event sitting on the table.
Speaking on Six Feet Under, The Undertaker said fans had been asking for the match for years. He believed the pairing was obvious, but McMahon never wanted to pull the trigger.
“The people had already been clamoring for that match for a long time, and it seemed like a no-brainer. Why on earth would you not do that?”
“For whatever reason, Vince did not see it, didn’t like it or didn’t want it. I was like, ‘Man, this is a home run. This is an easy main event for a pay-per-view.’”
The Undertaker admitted he never sat McMahon down for a long conversation about the decision. That left him without a real explanation for why WWE passed on one of wrestling’s biggest possible matches.
“I don’t really have an answer. I never had an in-depth conversation with Vince about why he didn’t want to do it.”
He compared the situation to a team refusing to throw a pitch to a hitter who could easily knock it out of the park. The Undertaker made it clear that the decision was never his. He does not blame himself, but he still wishes the match had happened.
“My goodness, Sting versus Undertaker. He obviously knows more about business than I do, but that one just seemed like a home run. They decided to walk the guy instead of pitch to him. I don’t know what happened there.”
“I don’t have any regrets. It wasn’t my decision, but my goodness, I would have loved to have been able to have that match.”
“I guess it just wasn’t meant to be, but what could have been?”
The two legends even talked about the missed opportunity after crossing paths on a flight. The Undertaker said neither of them understood why WWE kept them apart.
“I remember running into Sting. I think it was after the WrestleMania that we didn’t work. We were on the same plane together, talking. I was like, ‘I don’t know. This is beyond me. I don’t know why.’”
Sting joined WWE in 2014 and only wrestled twice for the company. He faced Triple H at WrestleMania 31 and Seth Rollins at Night of Champions before a neck injury ended his WWE run. The Undertaker believes the Sting match will remain one of wrestling’s biggest “what if” stories long after both men are gone.
“It’ll be discussed for the rest of time. What if these two guys had been able to do it?”
“That’s probably got to be the biggest miss of a WrestleMania. Those two characters would have done some incredible business. Wasn’t me. Wasn’t me.”
WWE had both men under contract and still never gave fans the match they spent years demanding. The Undertaker wanted it, Sting wanted it, and Vince McMahon was apparently the man who shut the door.
