Trick Williams walked into WWE Sunday Night’s Main Event looking to make a statement, and he left with championship gold. Trick defeated Baron Corbin on September 6 to become the new United States Champion after a chaotic match that included brutal offense, outside interference and one final opening Williams refused to waste.
Corbin came into the match already fired up after his Five Minute Challenge against Lil Yachty earlier in the night. He immediately took the fight to Trick, sending him into the announce table, ring post and steel steps while trying to wear him down before the match could really get going.
Trick eventually turned things around with a flying clothesline, flapjack and sit-out Death Valley Driver, but Corbin kept finding ways to stay alive. Corbin answered with a chokeslam and later connected with Deep Six, but neither move was enough to put Williams away.
Things started getting messy when Corbin went for the United States Championship belt. Lil Yachty grabbed the title away from him, which opened the door for Trick to land a Cyclone Kick. Corbin still kicked out, keeping the match alive.
Corbin eventually got his hands back on the championship while the referee was distracted with Yachty and blasted Trick with the belt. Somehow, Williams still kicked out.
That ended up being the turning point. Corbin tried to finish Trick with the End of Days, but Williams escaped and drilled him with a jumping knee. Trick covered Corbin and got the three-count, officially becoming the new United States Champion at Sunday Night’s Main Event.
Trick Williams now has another major championship to add to his résumé, and he got it by surviving everything Corbin threw at him. Corbin had the match in his hands more than once, but one mistake was all Trick needed to walk out with the title.
