AEW didn’t add Redemption to its pay-per-view schedule just because it needed another event. According to Tony Khan, the entire show was built around something he believes every wrestler on the roster has in common.
While appearing on the Battleground Podcast, Khan explained that the inspiration behind Redemption came from looking at the different paths AEW’s stars are currently on. Some are trying to stay champions. Others are fighting to climb back into the title picture after falling short. Then there are the younger names who are chasing the biggest opportunity of their careers for the very first time. To Khan, all of those stories point back to the same word.
“I think that for the wrestlers individually in AEW who are trying to either stay at the top or work their way back to the top, or in some cases get to the top for the first time, some of the young rising stars in AEW, Redemption represents an opportunity for the wrestlers but also for AEW as the company is really on a tremendous trajectory and we’ve had great growth.”
For Khan, the theme isn’t limited to the wrestlers. He believes AEW itself is entering one of the biggest stretches in company history, with Redemption serving as the launching point before the road reaches All In at Wembley Stadium—an event he expects to become the promotion’s biggest-attended show in years.
“I think this will be an awesome show… the company has really had us very strong few years and it feels like we’re on a great path as a company heading towards AEW All In in London at Wembley Stadium. That’s going to be a fantastic show. It’ll be by far the most attended show for AEW this year and in years… On the way to All In, there’s this massive show, Redemption coming up this Sunday on pay-per-view.”
That’s why Khan believes Redemption fits better than simply branding the event around one match or one championship. Instead, he wanted a pay-per-view where every match represents someone trying to hold onto success, get back what they lost or finally break through for the first time.
Whether that vision connects with fans remains to be seen, but Khan made one thing clear—the name Redemption wasn’t chosen because it sounded good. It was chosen because he believes it reflects where both AEW and its roster are right now.
