Tony Khan has a major tag team tournament on his mind, and the AEW President isn’t limiting the idea to talent already appearing on his television shows.

During the AEW Redemption media call, Khan was asked whether he would be interested in running a Crockett Cup-style tournament involving both the men’s and women’s divisions. Khan revealed that he has already spent plenty of time thinking about a large tournament featuring teams from across the wrestling world.

“It’s so cool that you asked that because, yes, I have been thinking a lot about having a big tag team tournament with teams throughout the world of wrestling.”

AEW currently works with several outside promotions, giving Khan no shortage of possible teams to bring into the tournament. He also made it clear that some of the teams involved could be acts AEW is still developing or hasn’t introduced on television yet.

“We have a lot of great partner promotions and a lot of great teams we’re building. There are teams featured in AEW, some we’re building up to feature more, and some that haven’t come onto the show at all yet.”

Khan said the idea is something he has seriously considered. He also wants to continue building the women’s tag team divisions in AEW and ROH before launching something similar for them.

“I think that’s a great thought, and it’s something I have considered. I would also like to do it as we continue building and developing more women’s tag teams in AEW and ROH.”

AEW has already held a tournament to crown its first Women’s World Tag Team Champions, with Harley Cameron and Willow Nightingale winning the titles. Khan’s latest comments suggest the company may have even bigger tournament plans waiting down the road.

A global tournament could give AEW a chance to bring in teams from ROH, CMLL and other partner promotions while also introducing fresh acts to its audience. Khan didn’t announce a date or format, but the idea is clearly more than something he has only thought about in passing.
