Mercedes Moné now knows who she will face in the Owen Hart Foundation Women’s Tournament finals at AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door, and the answer came during AEW’s Collision taping after Dynamite went off the air.
Moné punched her ticket to the finals on AEW Dynamite after defeating STARDOM’s Hazuki in a hard-fought semifinal match. Hazuki pushed “The CEO” throughout the bout with dives to the outside, a missile dropkick, a crossface, and several close calls, but Mercedes eventually locked in the Bank Statement to secure the win.
That left one big question: who would meet Mercedes at Forbidden Door? AEW answered that during the Collision taping for the June 20 episode, where Maya World defeated Athena to advance to the finals of the Owen Hart Foundation Women’s Tournament. That win now sets up Mercedes Moné vs. Maya World at Forbidden Door.
The result was a big one, because Athena was viewed as a dangerous obstacle in the tournament. Instead, Maya World scored the upset and earned the biggest opportunity of her AEW run so far.
Things also got ugly after the match. Mercedes Moné and Athena attacked Maya World after the bell, giving fans an early taste of the tension heading into the tournament finals.
Now the road is clear. Mercedes Moné is one win away from taking the Owen Hart Foundation Tournament, but Maya World just knocked off Athena and will walk into Forbidden Door with serious momentum.
