CM Punk has his next WWE Championship challenger—and the match is set for Mexico City.

During the WWE SmackDown tapings for the September 4, 2026 episode, Punk defeated Johnny Gargano before turning his attention to Sami Zayn. Punk challenged Zayn to a title match scheduled for the September 11 episode of SmackDown in Mexico City, Mexico.

The match came together after a wild night involving several potential challengers. Finn Bálor, Kevin Owens and Gunther all appeared around ringside during Punk’s match against Gargano, putting even more pressure on the WWE Champion.

Gargano only received the match after Punk offered him a championship opportunity during a backstage segment with Nick Aldis. Gargano accepted, returned to action and went straight after WWE’s biggest prize, but Punk walked away with the victory.

Once Gargano was handled, Punk called out Zayn and put the next championship match on the table. That means Punk will defend against Sami in front of what should be a red-hot Mexico City crowd on September 11.

Zayn now has a massive opportunity to leave Mexico with the WWE Championship, but Bálor, Owens and Gunther circling the situation could make Punk’s trip south of the border even more dangerous.

Will Sami Zayn defeat CM Punk for the WWE Championship in Mexico City, or will Punk survive another challenger? Leave your feedback and let us know in the comments.
