Dark Side of the Ring is coming back, and Season 7 already sounds messy in all the right ways.
Sean Ross Sapp spoke with Dark Side of the Ring co-creator Evan Husney before the new season premieres on Vice on July 7, and Husney dropped some big notes about what fans can expect.
One of the biggest reveals is that Karen Jarrett sat down for her first interview about the Kurt Angle, Jeff Jarrett, and TNA situation. That story has been talked about for years, but Karen finally giving her side is a huge get for the show. The Dark Side crew was able to make that happen after speaking with Jeff Jarrett, and that opened the door to getting Karen involved.
Husney also said they thought about doing a Who Killed WCW? style spin-off for TNA and ECW. Instead, they decided to keep it under Dark Side of the Ring and do a multi-part series on TNA.
That means fans are getting a deeper look at TNA’s wild years, and there is a lot to cover. Between backstage drama, power struggles, wild creative moves, and all the big personalities involved, TNA has more than enough material for Dark Side.
Husney also talked about Vince Russo and Jim Cornette both being used on the show. Those two obviously don’t see wrestling the same way, but Husney said that has never caused a problem. In fact, their different views help the episodes.
The show is also sitting on a mountain of footage. Husney said they have only used about four percent of what they have filmed. He said they sometimes go back and use old footage when needed, and he is proud of the archive they have built.
There may even be a path someday to releasing full interviews, which would be a big deal for fans who want more than what makes the final cut.
Husney also said the Renegade episode was heartbreaking to cover. He called it a story that has never really been told, so that one could hit hard.
Mike Awesome also came up, and Husney said his story is one of the most requested episodes they have ever had. The issue is that some people connected to the story still are not ready to talk yet.
Dark Side of the Ring knows exactly what fans want: wrestling stories that are ugly, emotional, and hard to look away from. Season 7 sounds like it is bringing all of that again.
