Brock Rechsteiner hasn’t even entered professional wrestling yet, and he’s already been dragged into the industry’s latest “pay your dues” argument.
After word got out that WWE is essentially ready to sign Scott Steiner’s son whenever his NFL career is over, Ben Bishop jumped onto Twitter with one very specific question—and anyone following the Avery Styles controversy knew exactly where he was going with it.
“Does he know how to set up a ring though?”
Yeah, that wasn’t really about Brock Rechsteiner. Bishop was taking a shot at the argument that erupted around AJ Styles’ son Avery after Arik Cannon accused the young wrestler of avoiding teardown work following a GCW show in Minneapolis. AJ defended his son by arguing that Avery was booked to wrestle, not work ring crew, which quickly turned into a much bigger debate over whether young wrestlers still need to “pay their dues” by helping set up and tear down independent shows.
Now Rechsteiner has accidentally become part of the joke. Fightful Select reported that WWE has been keeping tabs on the 6-foot-2, 225-pound wide receiver for years, with Rechsteiner already expressing interest in pursuing wrestling once he’s finished playing football. One WWE higher-up put his chances of eventually receiving an offer at:
“99.9 percent chance”
And WWE apparently isn’t planning on making him jump through many hoops to get there. The expectation is that Rechsteiner would be signed outright rather than being sent through a traditional WWE tryout. His current six-game NFL suspension isn’t expected to change the company’s interest either.
That made Bishop’s timing pretty hard to miss. While wrestling is currently arguing over whether AJ Styles’ son should have been stacking chairs and helping tear down a GCW show, another second-generation prospect could eventually walk straight from professional football into a WWE contract without even needing a tryout.
For now, Rechsteiner isn’t making that jump. Scott Steiner’s son still wants to see how far he can take his NFL career with the New Orleans Saints before turning his attention toward the family business. Whenever that day comes, though, apparently somebody better make sure he knows where the ring pieces go.
