WWE Clash in Italy already has a stacked lineup heading into this weekend, and a new backstage update reveals there was at least one notable name discussed internally for the show.

According to WrestleVotes Radio on Fightful Select, there was a pitch within WWE creative for Santino Marella to appear during Clash in Italy. There was no word on whether the idea advanced beyond the discussion stage or if WWE seriously pursued it further.

The pitch makes plenty of sense considering Santino’s history with WWE and his strong connection to Italy. Although he was born in Canada, Santino’s WWE debut became one of the more memorable moments of the Ruthless Aggression Era when he answered Vince McMahon’s open challenge in Milan and defeated Umaga to win the Intercontinental Championship in his very first match. That debut instantly turned Santino into one of WWE’s most recognizable comedy acts for years afterward.

Marella is currently working with TNA Wrestling, where he serves as the on-screen Director of Authority, but WWE and TNA have continued showing signs of cooperation over the last year through talent appearances and crossover discussions.

Clash in Italy takes place this weekend from Turin, and WWE is already loading the show with major matches involving Cody Rhodes, Gunther, Roman Reigns, Rhea Ripley, Jade Cargill, Brock Lesnar, and Oba Femi.
