EVIL made an immediate impact with his surprise debut on NXT, and now we know why he showed up in NXT instead of the main roster.

After making a surprise debut on the April 28 episode of NXT, EVIL immediately made an impact by confronting Tony D’Angelo in a lights-out segment that tied directly into the mystery box storyline WWE had been teasing the week before. The moment came out of nowhere, with the arena going dark before EVIL appeared in the ring face-to-face with the NXT Champion, handing him an item marked with the same symbol tied to the ongoing angle.

Now, according to Cory Hays of BodySlam.net, EVIL specifically requested to begin his WWE run in NXT, rather than being assigned there by the company.

“EVIL is starting in NXT at his own request.”

That changes the context around his debut in a big way. Leading into this, reports indicated that EVIL wasn’t even locked into a WWE brand internally. He was sitting in a holding category, with no confirmed placement on Raw, SmackDown, or NXT. There was also ongoing speculation that WWE might repackage him entirely, including potentially dropping the EVIL name once he appeared on television.

With this new detail, it’s clear that EVIL wasn’t just placed in NXT; he actively chose it, likely seeing it as the best platform to establish himself quickly within WWE’s system. And based on how he debuted, that plan is already in motion. Between the mystery angle, the direct confrontation with Tony D’Angelo, and the immediate limelight, this wasn’t a slow build; it was a statement.

Do you think EVIL choosing NXT and going straight after the champion was the right move, or should WWE have introduced him more gradually first? Let me know your thoughts.
